HOW TO GROW STARGAZER LILY

This fabulous oriental lily (our namesake), boasts stout sturdy stems that are 28" tall with clusters of very fragrant blooms. Stargazer lilies do not require staking and are very wind resistant. A fragrant and versatile hybrid, Stargazer lilies grow beautifully in perennial gardens and are well suited as a container garden plant. This showy Stargazer Lily has brilliant crimson colored flowers that are edged with pure white.
Here's how to grow Stargazer Lilies:
  • Select your location: Oriental lilies require well-drained soil in an area that receives sun or part shade. The ideal planting location will place the Stargazer oriental lily flowers and leaves in sun while shading their roots.
  • When to plant: Stargazer lilies can be planted either in the fall or spring, whenever the bulbs are available. For colder areas we recommend planting in the spring to avoid bulb rot over the first winter.
  • Purchase quality bulbs: Look for large, firm bulbs that show no signs of mold or mildew. Once you have the bulbs, handle the lily bulbs carefully because the scales can be easily broken off.
  • Dig a hole 4 to 6 inches deep and place the bulb in the hole with the roots pointing down. Cover the bulb with amended soil, and water.
  • Once new shoots start to appear, in late spring, fertilize the lily monthly with 4-8-4 organic fertilizer.
  • If your lilies are exposed without other perennials to shade their roots, mulch well to keep roots cool.
  • After they have bloomed, remove spent flowers to prevent seedpod formation.
  • Leave the foliage intact after they have bloomed to feed the bulb for next year.
  • Trim back dead leaves prior to winter, and lightly mulch to insulate ground over the winter.
  • Wait until spring for the show to start all over again!
FYI: The name Stargazer was given to this hardy lily because unlike other lilies, their blooms gaze up at the sky.
